We would like to invite you to the international conference on nuclear research “Science or Fiction - Is there a future for nuclear?”

The aim of this international one-day conference is to review and critically assess new concepts for fission and fusion reactors and to discuss the role of EURATOM. Nuclear power is back on the political agenda, promising to be the answer to the new challenges of securing energy supply and fighting climate change. However, the issues of nuclear safety, nuclear waste, proliferation and limitation of uranium resources remain unsolved.

The nuclear industry is attempting to respond to these open questions with research efforts in two sectors: for a new generation (Gen IV) of fission reactors and nuclear fusion.

The European Commission, as guardian of the EURATOM treaty, is a key player in this field. Fusion research is the number one priority of energy research under FP7, receiving more funding than all the non-nuclear energy options combined. The EU will also host the first large scale fusion reactor ITER at the Cadarache site.

A special feature for conference participants is the pre-conference reader: participants will receive this excellent overview of the current state of discussions on fusion and the reactors of Generation IV . The question of climate change is setting the frame for this publication, which is being prepared by the Institute of Applied Ecology Vienna and the Vienna Environmental Ombudsman (a download link will be sent to you).
